The Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass gives unlimited travel on JR trains nationwide for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, in Ordinary class or Green (first) class. It's only for visitors to Japan; see our FAQ for who can buy it and how it compares with regular tickets.
- Unlimited JR travel for the length of the pass
- Covers the Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and Tsubame shinkansen with no extra charge
- Nozomi and Mizuho shinkansen need a separate "Nozomi Mizuho ticket" (Tokyo–Kyoto ¥4,960)
- Doesn't cover subways or private railways
Prices (adult)
| Pass | Official site | Via an agent |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days, Ordinary | ¥50,000 | ¥53,000 |
| 14 days, Ordinary | ¥80,000 | ¥84,000 |
| 21 days, Ordinary | ¥100,000 | ¥105,000 |
| 7 days, Green | ¥70,000 | ¥74,000 |

| 21 days, Green | ¥140,000 | ¥147,000 |
Children aged 6–11 pay about half. The official site is cheaper; agents sell an "exchange order" that you swap for the pass at a major station within 3 months. JR says the official-site prices are held "for a limited time".
Is it worth it?
Only if you're covering a lot of distance in a short time. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip on the Nozomi costs about ¥28,000, so a 7-day pass needs a fair amount of other long-distance travel in the same week to pay off. Add up your actual trips first; our sample fares help.
